In this how to we will demonstrate how to make a hinge for a Hot Wheels casting, necessary to make a custom opening hood or trunk.
Tools (linked to Amazon images)
Step 1.
Plan out what part of the casting you will cut out to be hinged. Drill a 0.8mm hole in the corners where you will have to change directions.
This will minimize the strain on the blade and keep your corners sharp.
Step 2.
In this example, three sides of the engine cover will be cut with the jewelry saw. The forth side is open to the back window.
About the jewelry saw. The jewelry saw comes with over 100 blades for a reason. They are very fragile and ware out quickly. It took three blades to remove the engine lid from this casting.
Breaking blades are normal but breaking the blades can be minimized with practice and being gentle.
Step 3.
Now we will use a paperclip to make a hinge.
The way the paperclip hinge works is the metal inside the rubber cover will turn.
By removing the end parts of the rubber cover (see pic), you are able to super glue the rubber to the hood/trunk, and the exposed metal to the body of the Hot Wheels.
The example above is a very simple hinge.
Sometimes you will have to bend the paperclip to fit the contours of the casting, and sometimes it will be better to glue the plastic part of the paperclip to the body of the car, and the metal part to the trunk/hood or door.
